In a recommendation to the Inter-state Council, the state government has told the Centre that it should choose names sent by the state government for the post of the Governor. At present, the Centre makes the appointment after an informal consultation with the state government.

“We have recommended that the state government will send a panel of three names and the Centre will have to select one of them ,” a state official told The Indian Express. “We have also recommended that the Governor will be bound by the state cabinet advice in his day to day work,” he added.

At its Coimbatore party congress held in March last year,Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had moved a resolution that the power of appointing Governors should be left to the states. The tenure of Gandhi ends in December this year.
