The Left-ruled state government is ready to go for privatisation in the education sector.
The Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government will set up schools under the public-private partnership model in the backward districts especially those in the Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas,as well as those dominated by minorities.
As of now the state government has identified 87 backward blocks of the state where it will set up such model schools under the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan scheme of the Centre. As per the scheme,75 per cent of the fund is provided by the Centre and the rest is pulled in by the state. These schools – which will cost Rs 3.5 crore each – will be set up in each of the 87 blocks.
We sent project report for 40 such schools to the Centre and half of the money for 38 schools has already been sent to us. After we get the money for all these 87 schools,we will start work on the project, said Bikram Sen,Principal Secretary,department of secondary education.
Sen attended a meeting to review the implementation of the scheme at the Writers Buildings today. The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh. These schools will be set up in Purulia,Bankura,West Midnapore,Bibhum,Darjeling,Cochbehar,Malda,Murshidabad,North Dinajpore and South 24-Parganas.
Students lock up teachers,police come to the rescue
Students of a government-aided school in Sheoraphuli in Hooghly today locked 30 teachers inside the teachers room for six hours. The teachers were later released after police intervention. The students and their guardians started protesting in front the school since morning as 14 students could not qualify in the test examination, said Kankar Prasad Barui,SDPO,Sreerampore.
After rescuing the teachers,the police took two of the guardians to meet the headmistress for a mutual understanding,but no consensus could be reached.
Namita Singha Roy,Headmistress,Surendranath Vidyaniketan,said: The test examination is a process through which the preparation of the students for the higher secondary exam is tested. These 14 students could not qualify in the test and we will not allow them to appear in the final examination.
