Buddha forms panel for Tagore’s 150th anniversary celebrations

On March 24,2004,Tagore’s medal,along with other personal belongings of the poet and his family,were stolen from the Rabindra museum of Shantiniketan. Even the CBI has failed to make a breakthrough in the case.

Meanwhile,the state government will invite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to inaugurate the programme to celebrate Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary,Bhattacharjee said. He said the Prime Minister gave him all assurance of Central help to make the programme a success. Bangladesh Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina Wajed has already given a proposal to the Centre for a joint celebration of the event.

The committee set up by the CM will have eminent poet Nirendranath Chakrabarthy as its chairman. “There will be representatives from other central and state cultural institutions,universities and heritage commission,” the CM said.

One major work of the government would be to repair Jorasankho Thakurbari,the birthplace of the poet,which is in a dilapidated condition at present. The other jobs that the government will do during the year-long celebration will be to repair the Nimtolla burning ghat,where Tagore was cremated,publication of his works,particularly his paintings,organising seminars and cultural programmes.
