Briefly State: Gurung acquitted in three cases

Gurung,who appeared before a Kalimpong court was acquitted in the three cases for which police had filed chargesheet.

Darjeeling: Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung was Friday acquitted in three cases in connection with blocking of National Highway-31A by GJM activists in 2011. Gurung,who appeared before a Kalimpong court was acquitted in the three cases for which police had filed chargesheet. He was however also charged for instigating people against it in Sipchu area of Kalimpong,which resulted in violence and death of two persons,would have to reappear before the court on December 10 in connection with five other cases pending against him. The cases also included torching of a government bungalow in Sipchu.

State to HC: ‘Will clean Rabindra Sarobar’

Kolkata: The Bengal government Friday assured the Calcutta High Court that it will take necessary steps to clean the Rabindra Sarobar if it was polluted after Chhath puja. A PIL in this regard was filed by the Calcutta Citizens Initiatives and Lake Lovers Forum that alleged the Rabindra Sarobar was polluted every year after Chatth puja,but the state government did little to clean it. The petition urged the High Court to pass an order to check pollution in the South Kolkata lake.

Amri fire: State gets two more weeks

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court Friday gave state government two weeks to reply to a petition alleging that the Kolkata police did not probe the role of fire officials in connection with the fire that broke out at AMRI Hospital on December 9,2011. On September 23,the court had granted six weeks to government to file reply,but the latter failed to do so. Petitioner advocate Ramaprasad Sarkar pleaded that the state government did not conduct a probe against fire brigade officials who had illegally granted NOCs to the hospital.

Woman delivers child at metro station

Kolkata: A 32- year-old woman delivered a baby at the Girish Park metro station Friday,police said. Soon after Mumtaz Begum boarded the metro rail at Dum Dum metro station,she started feeling the labour pain. Mumtaz,a resident of Habra in North-24 Parganas who was travelling with her husband Rafikul Islam,got down at the Girish park Metro station where she delivered a baby girl. “The couple sought help from the station master and the Railway Protection Staff present there. The authorities took the woman to a safe spot on the platform where she delivered the baby before any medical help could be offered,” a Metro official said.

Kumar appointed DG of National Library

New Delhi: P Y Rajendra Kumar was appointed as Director General,National Library,Kolkata,by the Ministry of Culture Friday. He will serve as the DG for three years. ENS & PTI
