The Forward Bloc, which has been severely critical of ally CPM following the Lefts rout in Bengal, began its five-day national conference today at Mahajati Sadan in Kolkata with a public meeting addressed by senior party leaders.
On the second day of the session tomorrow,CPM general secretary Prakash Karat will outline alternatives before the Left but Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose have decided to stay away. CPI general secretary A B Bardhan will also address the session on Friday.
We are going to discuss the Lefts alternatives tomorrow with Karat and Bardhan, said Blocs general secretary Debabrata Biswas. This is a national-level meeting. So we have not invited any state leaders. National leaders of the four Left parties have been invited to attend, he said, when asked whether the CM or LF chairman was invited for the session.
Forward Bloc has 24 MLAs in the state Legislative Assembly, besides two Lok Sabha members and a Rajya Sabha member. About 1,500 delegates from 23 states will be attending the five-day session. Twenty-eight delegates from different countries, including Bangladesh and Pakistan, have also arrived in the city to attend the conference.
Addressing the gathering today, state secretary of Bloc Ashok Ghosh said the unity of Left parties can save Left politics in the country. No party, big or small, can take a unilateral decision… this is the main thing we sometimes have forgotten, said Ghosh, alluding to the CPM.
