THE BENGAL BJP on Friday organised a march to ‘Swasthya Bhawan’, the headquarters of the state health department, raising concern over the “adenovirus situation” and an increase in number of death of children in the
state due to “acute respiratory infection”.
The police tried to persuade them to call off the march and then forcibly dispersed the crowd. The BJP alleged that the police manhandled its workers, resulting in injuries to some.
The police, however, claimed that the BJP had not taken permission for the protest and pointed out that Section 144 of the CrPC is in force in the area.
The protesters gathered at Karunamoyee More from where they were planning to walk towards Swastha Bhawan. The police put up barricades at several spots to prevent them from moving ahead with the march.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate deployed massive police force at the spot.
The protest march was led by BJP state general secretary Agnimitra Paul and its Yuva Morcha leader Indranil Khan. “Withstanding administrative excesses, our spirited karyakartas broke through multiple police barricades, suffered injuries and reached Swasthya Bhawan to submit a deputation seeking for govt action and transparency to tackle adenovirus cases costing the lives of children in West Bengal,” said Khan.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said, “The police said Section 144 is there. So, they could have allowed two-three of us. We were doing a peaceful march and wanted to only submit the deputation at Swastha Bhawan. It is an authoritarian government, which has completely failed to control the situation. Their sole focus is to silence any voice raised in protest.”
