The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) is coming up with a national level Innovation Centre to provide a platform for inter-disciplinary teaching and research.
This is the first time a state university in West Bengal is venturing into innovation,fusing various technologies and aiming to produce Intellectual Property Rights and patents on such a large-scale.
The Innovation Centre at the 153-year-old institute the second oldest engineering institute in India will be managed by experts from the academia and the industry. It will act as a nodal centre for local,national and international collaborations.
A separate building will be dedicated to the centre where students will take part in discussions and experiments. Its foundation will be laid by Kapil Sibal,the Union minister for Human Resource and Development,at the university on August 1.
Some IITs have already set up incubation centres and science parks to provide a smooth interface between the institution and the industry.
In terms of industry collaboration,the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will provide the necessary inputs. The member companies of CII will work together with BESU to convert ideas into market-oriented robust products.
Stressing on the need of Industry-Academia collaboration,Mukul Somany,Chairman,CII Eastern region,said academia has to be positioned according to the needs of the industry.
The university Vice-Chancellor,Ajoy Kumar Ray,said the centre will work on local,regional and national level. Each Local Innovation Centre will be provided with a separate Intellectual Property Rights office.
