Bengal is likely to get 2-3 days of rainfall, ranging from 'light' to 'very heavy' (Representative image: PTI).Cyclone Montha Bengal Weather Update: West Bengal is likely to get Cyclone Montha-induced squalls with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along the coasts on Wednesday, October 29. According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light rain is likely in some districts of North Bengal, while heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in south Bengal.
Light rain or thundershower is likely to occur in some districts of North Bengal on October 29, due to which a yellow alert has been issued for the day in Malda, North & South Dinajpur and Jalpaiguri due to the possibility of thunderstorms.
The weather is more or less likely to be the same the next day, with a yellow alert in Malda, North & South Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong districts.
The IMD has issued an orange alert in Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Coochbehar, Darjeeling, and Alipurduar for Friday due to the possibility of ‘heavy’ to ‘very heavy’ rain. A yellow alert will be in place for Malda and North & South Dinajpur.
A rainfall of 2.5mm-15.5mm in 24 hours is classified as light rain, whereas rainfall of 15.6-64.4mm is categorised as ‘moderate’. If the 24-hour average rainfall is between 64.5 and 115.5 mm, it is classified as ‘heavy rain’. The rainfall is classified as ‘very heavy’ if it is over 115.6mm and below 204.4 mm. Anything above 204.5 is categorised as ‘extreme’.
Heavy rain (07-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over South 24 Parganas, Jhargram and East and West Midnapore districts. Thunderstorms have also been forecast for the day in South Bengal, due to which a yellow alert will be in place.
On Thursday (October 30), heavy rain is very likely to occur in Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad and West Bardhaman, while Birbhum and Murshidabad could receive heavy rain on Saturday, as per the IMD. A yellow alert has been issued for both the days.
The IMD has warned of the possibility of landslides in hilly areas and waterlogging in low-lying areas. There is also the possibility of lightning strikes, especially in open fields, the IMD said. Traffic movement will also be hit. There could be partial damage to crops, too, the IMD said.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea along and off the West Bengal coast till at least Thursday.
On Wednesday, Kolkata is likely to see partly cloudy sky with possibility of heavy rain or thunder. The maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be around 31°C and 25°C, respectively.
For the next two days, the weather is likely to remain the same, as per the IMD. The temperature could start rising on Saturday.
The severe cyclonic Storm Montha has now weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh. Cyclone Montha moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph “about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh), 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha)”, the IMD said.
It is likely to move nearly northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of cyclonic storm during next 6 hours, and weaken further into a deep depression today, the IMD said.
