Bengal to get first integrated checkpost at Petrapole

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will lay the foundation stone for the state's first integrated checkpost at Petrapole in North 24- Parganas district bordering Bangladesh on Saturday.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will lay the foundation stone for the state’s first integrated checkpost at Petrapole in North 24- Parganas district bordering Bangladesh on Saturday.

The modern,state-of-the-art checkpost will be built on the model of an airport checkpost in an area of 80.2 acres and wwill cost Rs 94 crore. The Central government will bear the entire expense of setting up the checkpost.

The Centre is also planning to set up a Landports Authority of India comprising all landports on the line of Airport Authority of India,said state chief secretary Samar Ghosh. He said the landport at Petrapole will be built in a period of 18-24 months.

“The checkpost will have features as warehouse,immigration centres,comfortable restrooms,to name a few. The idea will to ensure smooth,fast and hassle free movement of people and commodities across the two countries. There will also be lesser chance of pilferage or theft,” Ghosh said.

Chidambaram will be accompanied by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. ENS
