Beaten CPM debates July ’08 pullout,Third Front

Senior CPM leaders today agreed that the “July 2008 pullout” decision — the Left’s withdrawal of support from the previous UPA government — is still a big issue in the party.

Senior CPM leaders today agreed that the “July 2008 pullout” decision — the Left’s withdrawal of support from the previous UPA government — is still a big issue in the party.

In a closed-door party meeting held on Friday evening, party politburo member and state Industries Minister Nirupam Sen said whether it was a correct decision for Left parties still continues to be raised.

“It is true we failed to take the Indo-US nuclear deal to the people, especially its complications and the dangerous side. But it would have been incorrect if we were a party to the deal,” said Sen. Although a section of Bengal party leaders had openly pointed out that withdrawal of support from the UPA government was one of the reasons for the CPM’s poll debacle,Sen,known as a Prakash Karat follower in the party, claimed the pullout decision was correct in the context of the party “ideology”.

Party sources said that immediately after the results of the Lok Sabha polls, state CPM secretary Biman Bose, among others, had openly said that the withdrawal of support affected the poll prospects of the Left in Bengal.

“People thought that we are against stability,” Bose had said. But Sen’s claim at Friday’s meeting made it clear that the issue is still unresolved in the party.

Sen also backed the Third Front idea initiated by Karat in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls this year. “It is a wrong perception that the country is going to divide between two political parties. The election results show a different picture.
