He is a fourth standard-passed mechanic from the city who devised a system by which vehicle doors open automatically once the driver approaches the car.

Forty-seven-year old Nasir Ahmed Sheikh’s invention has become the latest addition to the world’s largest innovation database, and a patent for his innovation is expected to be filed Monday.

Innovating upon the common locking systems available for vehicles,Nasir combined an ordinary remote controller,a radio wave receiver connected to a machine,a lever and a hydraulic jumper to pull off his feat.

His creation was first discovered by a photojournalist, who informed IIM-Ahmedabad Professor Anil K Gupta, who is also the executive vice-chairperson of the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).

NIF officials Anil Pandey and Mahesh Patel visited Nasir at his shop on Saturday afternoon to document his innovation and get more details so a patent can be filed on his behalf as soon as possible.

Nasir, proprietor of the “M N Auto Electric Service” shop in Khanpur, demonstrated his innovation in front of the visiting officials. He has installed the system in his yellow-coloured Mitsubishi Lancer.

As Nasir, who has been a mechanic since 2000 in this busy part of the walled city, approached the driver’s side of the car with the controller in his pocket, the door automatically opened, and the side-mirror,hitherto folded, also flipped open at right angles.

As he moved away, the door locked automatically while the mirror folded in again.

This is not the first of Nasir’s innovations. He has also invented an automatic light for scooters with no fuel meters such as the old Bajaj and LML scooters.

“I often saw people looking for a light source before peering into the fuel tank to see how much fuel is there. So I made a small light and fitted that inside the tank so that they can see better,” he said.

He also shared some ideas he is working on currently, but declined to allow them for publication at this time.

Prof Gupta, who visited the mechanic on Saturday, said his organisation — SRISTI — would “help (Nasir) develop a grassroots academy of auto innovations.” He said the device could also be used in vehicles such as an ambulance, where medics need help with opening of doors while they lift stretchers and patients inside.
