Writing is an art so is crafting each letter. Mocha ArtHouse at DLF Promenade,Vasant Kunj,is showcasing the collaborative works of six friends who are bound together by a love for calligraphy. From Delhi,Mumbai and Ahmedabad,Nikheel Aphale,Amit Kharsani,Sarang Kulkarni,Noopur Datye,Pradnya Naik and Yashodeep Gholap have put together a 45-piece exhibition that will be on till July 10. The show explores the different artistic styles of letterformthe art of forming each letter.
The artists trace the graphic form of each alphabet by removing the utilitarian functions of the letters. Calligraphy is one of the most subtle forms of expressions, says Aphale,a 2006 NID graduate. None of the works tries to impose the viewer to read the words on the paper, but to explore the structure of the letterforms .
Most of the artists have used non-traditional tools like broken sticks and fused different styles of writing in their work. Predominately in black and white, the focus of the art is on drawing the written as creatively as possible.
Curator of Mocha ArtHouse,Avinash Kumar says that the artists were commissioned for the project while Aphale adds,Sometimes it takes 15 minutes while at others one is not satisfied even after two days. Calligraphy is not our full-time profession, most of us are graphic designers by day. The price of the artworks start at Rs 8,000.
