Alert motorman, RPF cop foil two Metro suicide bids

The Metro services were affetced for 20 minutes, the officials said

An alert Metro Railway motorman and an RPF constable Friday foiled suicide bids in two separate incidents in Kolkata, Metro Railway sources said.

In one such incident at around 8.30 am, a 42-year-old man tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of a metro train at the down line of Shahid Khudiram station and suffered leg injuries, officials said.

An alert motorman noticed it, applied the brakes and stopped the train, they said, adding the man was rescued from the track later and administered first aid by a Metro Railway doctor.

Normal Metro services which were affected for 20 minutes resumed thereafter, the officials said.

Metro Railway sources said another suicide attempt was thwarted by an RPF personnel when a 25-year-old youth jumped on the down line of Maidan station at around 9.25 am.

The constable came down in the tunnel and drew attention of the motorman of an approaching train, risking his own life.

The motorman stopped the train and the youth was rescued from the tracks with forehead injuries.

He was also administered first aid by the Metro Railway’s doctor and subsequently sent to the state-run SSKM Hospital for further treatment.

Metro services were affected for ten minutes due to the incident, the officials added.
