Trouble brewed at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute on Thursday over the screening of a Bengali film – Khokababu – with students putting up pamphlets on the campus and claiming that the after-party would violate the sanctity of the institution.
Incidentally,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the screening of the film – which was released on January 13 – at the behest of actor Dev. The last screening attended by the chief minister was the Prosenjit-starrer Moner Manush.
We are very upset with the way a film and television institute campus is being used. We strongly condemn this event. We have no problem with the film screening. It is the after-party that we are against, a student of the direction department said.
The students met the director of the institute,Shankar Mohan, who asked them to remove the pamphlets.
We have promised to keep the situation peaceful and not resort to any other form of protest. But the pamphlets will stay. People should see what is happening here, the student said.
Established in 1995 and funded by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the SRFTI rents out its auditoriums and premises to individuals and organisations for screenings and shootings.
