33 held for Nonadanga protest

Police arrested 33 people after resorting to mild lathicharge as 100 protesters of various organisations,led by Nonadanga Ucched Pratirodh Committee,demonstrate against their eviction and demanded a proper assurance of rehabilitation by the state government at Esplanade in Wednesday.

Police arrested 33 people after resorting to mild lathicharge as 100 protesters of various organisations,led by Nonadanga Ucched Pratirodh Committee,demonstrate against their eviction and demanded a proper assurance of rehabilitation by the state government at Esplanade in Wednesday.

The demonstration started at 12.30 pm and continued till late evening. “We want rehabilitation of over 200 evicted families of Nonadanga. They have been given many assurances but nothing has materialised. We demand an assurance from the government,” said Amitava Bhattacharya,president,Nonadanga Ucched Pratirodh Committee.

Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim had reportedly assured them that he would meet the representatives of the committee sometime between June 26 and July 3.

Around 250 slum-dwellers were evicted from Nonadanga,on the eastern fringes of the city,in a KMDA drive,in late March.
