While Pradesh Congress president Pranab Mukherjee was presiding over the party’s Chintan Shibir in Krishnanagar and expressing concern over desertion of workers,17 party members from the Congress-dominated Bhatjangla gram panchayat in Krishnanagar block joined the Trinamool Congress.

They were backed by nearly 10,000 supporters.

In the presence of Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar,Tapas Pal,and Trinamool leader and Union Minister of State for Shipping,Mukul Roy,the members joined the party at Nizam Palace in Kolkata.

For the past 20 years, the Bhatjangla panchayat was controlled by the Congress with a token presence of CPM and the Trinamool Congress.

Kamal Ghosh, pradhan of the Bhatjangla panchayat, who also joined the Trinamool Congress today, said: “We left the Congress as the party leaders did not respect us. I was an active Congress worker and popularised the party among the locals here. But the party leaders did not even invite me to the Chintan Shibir. So we joined the Trinamool.”
