Political controversy erupts after Jaipur Municipal Corporations merged

The Congress has strongly opposed the merger and ward reduction, calling it an attempt to manipulate the electoral landscape in BJP’s favour. Last month, Congress had organised a protest in Jaipur against the move.

The Jaipur Local Self Government Department has issued an order to merge the two municipal corporations — Jaipur Heritage and Jaipur Greater — into a single entity, now called Jaipur Municipal Corporation. The merger will take effect after the current term of Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation and Jaipur Municipal Corporation Heritage Board ends.

The order, issued on March 27 by Local Self Government Director Inderjeet Singh, finalises the reversal of the 2019 decision under the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government, which had split Jaipur’s municipal body into two corporations, increasing the number of wards from 90 to 250. Now, under the BJP government, the corporations will be reunited, with the number of wards reduced to 150.

At a recent meeting of the Jaipur City District Congress Committee, leaders vowed to fight a “do-or-die” battle against the re-merger and re-demarcation of wards. Congress has urged its workers to file as many objections as possible against the new ward boundaries.

Congress leader Rohit Bohra accused the BJP government of misrepresenting Jaipur’s population to justify the changes. “The government claims Jaipur’s population is 32 lakhs, but voter records indicate over 50 lakh voters. Their goal is to divide Congress’ vote bank and redraw wards in BJP’s favour,” he stated.

In contrast, BJP leaders argue that reducing the number of wards will improve governance and ease the financial burden on the administration. The delimitation process is currently underway by municipal officials.

With political tensions rising, the restructuring of Jaipur’s municipal governance is set to be a key battleground in the city’s political landscape.
