Confronted for harassing woman, man on bail in murder case slits own throat in Jaipur

A man out on bail in a murder case slit his throat with a paper cutter on Friday in Jaipur after he was confronted by a group of people for allegedly harassing a woman, police said.

In a video that went viral on social media, the man is seen surrounded by people leading to an altercation. In the middle of this, the man, identified as Anand Sharma (35), takes out a paper cutter from his pocket and slits his throat and starts running away before falling down on the road.

The police, who were informed immediately, rushed the man to Kanwatia Hospital, where doctors declared him dead due to excessive bleeding.

The incident took place at 8 am in Jhotwara area of the state capital.

According to police officials, Sharma was in Delhi’s Tihar jail in a murder case and was out on bail.

Jhotwara ACP Surendra Singh Ranawat said Sharma, a resident of Bansur in Alwar, had shifted to Jaipur recently and had been living in Jhotwara area’s Joshi Marg and working as a statue maker.

He further said that Sharma had been stalking and harassing a woman sanitation worker for the past one week.

The woman had told her husband about Sharma. So, on Friday, while the woman was on her way to work, her husband caught Sharma and confronted him when he started to harass her. Soon, a crowd gathered and Sharma was threatened that he would be handed over to the police.

Surrounded, Sharma pushed the crowd and tried to run even as he slit his throat and said, “Ab pakad ke dikhao (try catching me now).” After running for barely 20 metres, he collapsed and fell on the road.

“Police have collected evidence with the help of FSL team and are investigating the matter. It is possible that he was suffering from some mental issues because of which he took the step,” said Ranawat.
