Centre planning Outer Ring Rail project along Regional Ring Road in Telangana, says G Kishan Reddy
The first-of-its-kind project will revolutionize travel in Hyderabad's periphery and decongest major railway stations in the city, he said.

Union Minister and MP from Secunderabad G Kishan Reddy on Wednesday, June 28 revealed the Union government’s plans for an outer ring rail (ORR) on the periphery of the upcoming 350 km-long Regional Ring Road around Hyderabad. Speaking to reporters, he said the outer ring rail and regional ring road project are being taken up for the first time in the country. The first-of-its-kind project will revolutionize travel in Hyderabad’s periphery and decongest major railway stations in the city, he said.
Reddy stated that the railway ministry has sanctioned Rs 13.95 crore for a final location survey (FLS) for the project estimated to cost around Rs 26,000 crore. According to him, the details of the project have already been shared with the state government and 99 per cent of the preparatory works regarding the route map have been completed. Fifty per cent of the cost of land acquisition for the project would be borne by the union government, he said, adding that the state government has also allocated Rs 500 crore for the same.
According to a communication sent from the Railway Board to the General Manager of South Central Railway, the 563.5 km railway line will include a 536 km Outer Ring Rail that will run parallelly to the RRR with a bypass-cum-rail over rail at Akkanapet, Yadadri, Chityal, Burgula, Vikarabad and Gate Vanampalli. By locating hubs in locations connecting Vijayawada, Guntur, Warangal, Nizamabad, Medak, Mumbai and Vikarabad railway lines, he said people could travel to their respective destinations without coming into the city.
“This project will benefit the business and transport sector as well, besides the residents of Hyderabad’s surrounding districts. It will significantly benefit the people by reducing congestion at major terminals such as Secunderabad, Nampally, Kacheguda, and Lingampally and at the same time connect the socio-economically backward regions of the state,” he said.
Reddy also touched upon the MMTS phase-2 expansion, stating that the 33-km railway line between Ghatkesar and Raigir will be fully funded by the Railways. According to him, the state government has not sanctioned the requisite funds for the project even after 8 years and hence the Union government has decided to take it up wholly.
“Despite the State Government’s reluctance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the Union Minister for Railways Ashwin Vaishnaw to expedite the MMTS second phase expansion at an estimated cost of Rs 330 crore. Though the state government was to bear two-thirds of the project cost, the expansion will be completed only with railway funds,” the Union minister said.
