In line with the announcement he made earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy said in a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that he would be shifting to Visakhapatnam and that he would work from the port city from July 1.

The Chief Minister had announced at the Global Investors Summit held on March 3-4 in Visakhapatnam that it would be the administrative capital of the state and that he would soon shift to the city.

Addressing investors at the International Diplomatic Alliance Meet in New Delhi on January 31, CM Jagan had announced that Visakhapatnam will be the capital of Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. “I myself will be shifting there (Visakhapatnam) in the months to come,’’ he had said.

Notably, the Amaravati capital issue is still pending with the Supreme Court.

During the two-day global investors’ summit, the CM and his ministers aggressively promoted the plan of making Visakhapatnam the administrative capital.

Industries Minister G Amarnath had said that the global investors’ summit and the proposed G20 summit working group committee meeting on March 28-29 have elevated the status of the port city and it will soon become the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Sources said that a few buildings, that are being constructed on Rushikonda hill after demolishing an old hotel, will house some of the state government offices, including the CM’s office.

Jagan has been pushing for decentralised development and has proposed three capitals – Amaravati as legislative capital, Visakhpatnam as executive capital and Kurnool as judicial capital – for the state.

The CM and YSRC ministers and leaders have been holding public meetings and rallies to drum up support for the three-capital plan.

During Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, 45 agenda items were discussed. The Cabinet approved 15 Bills which will be introduced in the Assembly. The Cabinet also approved the 2023-27 industrial policy of the state government.

During the meeting, Jagan also issued a warning to ministers that some of them will be dropped from Cabinet if their performance does not improve.
