Heavy rains in North India: Movement of 400 trains hit between July 7 and 13

The danger level of water under the Old Yamuna Bridge, that takes trains to the Old Delhi railway station, is 204.83 metres. Yamuna breached this a few days ago and stood well above at 208.53 metres on Thursday, Railways said.

Unprecedented rainfall across North India over the past few days hit the movement of about 400 passenger trains between July 7 and 13, the ̌Indian Railways said Thursday.

This was in addition to 600 mail or express trains being affected for 6 days previously, it added.

The danger level of water under the Old Yamuna Bridge, that takes trains to the Old Delhi railway station, is 204.83 metres. Yamuna breached this a few days ago and stood well above at 208.53 metres on Thursday, the Railways said.

Since Sunday, 15 long-distance mail trains and 122 passenger trains (local, short-distance, intercity) have been cancelled due to the rains.

Northern Railway has had to divert 101 mail/express trains and 26 passenger trains to avoid the Yamuna Bridge, while it has partially cancelled or short-terminated 78 such trains. The most number trains were affected over the past two days, as per data released by Railways Thursday.

Due to incessant rain and inclement weather in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, train services have been affected in Ambala, Delhi, Firozpur and Moradabad divisions of Northern Railway, a Northern Railway statement said.

“Passengers were informed through SMS. Help desks were opened to guide the passenger’s at all major stations. Regular announcements are being done at stations too,” a Northern Railway spokesman said.

“Extra counters have been opened on various locations for providing information and facilitate refund of e-tickets. Supply of catering items has been increased. Buses have been arranged to carry affected passengers to destination stations by road,” he said.
