Where it is likely to go down to the wire

The traditional Congress versus BJP fight has been altered by the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party. All eyes are on this third party,with many wondering whether it will play spoiler or win some seats. Of the 70 seats that make up the Delhi House, the contest is expected to be very keen at 25 places,where the fights are mostly triangular. Newsline does a quick scan:

New Delhi

Total number of voters: 1,24,035

Sheila Dikshit (INC) vs Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) vs Vijender Gupta (BJP)

* The Chief Minister takes on the untested AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and former state BJP president Vijender Gupta. Kejriwal and Dikshit had to canvass for their parties across the city while Gupta had time to concentrate only on New Delhi.

Okhla

Total number of voters: 2,35,966

Asif Mohammad Khan (INC) vs

Dhir Singh Bidhuri (BJP) vs Brahm Singh (BSP)

* The Okhla seat has always witnessed keen contests because of the cross-section of voters there — from industrialists to students to farmers. Bidhuri has set his sights on the farmer votes while Brahm Singh is counting on Gujjar votes. Sitting MLA Asif Mohammad Khan switched from the RJD to Congress.

RK Puram

Total number of voters: 1,33,102

Barkha Singh (INC) vs Anil Kumar Sharma (BJP) vs Shazia Ilmi (AAP) vs Dhiraj Kumar Tokas (BSP)

* Barkha Singh defeated her BJP rival by almost 10,000 votes in 2008. But this year,a four-way contest has complicated matters. Main challengers Anil Sharma and AAP’s Shaziya Ilmi (who took a hit after a sting that her party claimed had been doctored) have focussed on local issues,especially women’s safety. BSP’s Dhiraj Tokas,one of the richest candidates in the fray,has a large,loyal Jat votebank.

Patparganj

Total number of voters: 1,89,128

Anil Kumar Chaudhary (INC) vs Nakul Bhardwaj (BJP) vs Manish Sisodia (AAP)

* Sitting MLA Anil Kumar Chaudhary is up against BJP’s young face Bhardwaj and one of AAP’s top leaders. Rivals will look to capitalise on anti-incumbency.

Hari Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,50,235

Harsharan Singh Balli (INC) vs

Shyam Sharma (SAD)

* For four consecutive terms,Hari Nagar has been a BJP stronghold with Balli as MLA. But Balli has now switched sides,joining the Congress.

Kondli

Total number of voters: 1,59,307

Amrish Singh Gautam (INC) vs Dushyant Gautam (BJP) vs

Manoj Kumar (AAP)

* With the entry of AAP,BSP and CPI (ML),Congress support in

many JJ clusters and villages has diminished.

Palam

Total number of voters: 2,03,907

Vinay Mishra (INC) vs Dharamdev Solanki (BJP) vs Madan Mohan (BSP)

* West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra’s son Vinay is up against three-time BJP MLA Dharamdev Solanki. BSP candidate Madan Mohan’s wife Sudeshvati is the Palam municipal councillor.

Bawana

Total number of voters: 2,72,560

Surender Kumar (INC) vs Guggan Singh (BJP)

* Drainage and water are big issues in Bawana. Surender Kumar is battling anti-incumbency and a new BJP face.

Trilokpuri

Total number of voters: 1,63,886

Sunil Kumar Vaidya (BJP) vs Raju (AAP) vs Harnam Singh (INC)

* Vaidya is banking on the urban electorate,pointing to development work he claims to have got done in the constituency. AAP’s Raju is counting on the rural voters while Harnam Singh has promised to check rising crime in the area.

Mehrauli

Total number of voters: 1,56,039

Pravesh Sahib Singh (BJP) vs Yoganand Shastri (INC)

* Pravesh Sahib Singh (who changed his name from Pravesh Verma,so voters could recognise him as the son of the late Sahib Singh Verma) is up against four-time MLA and Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri.

Ghonda

Total number of voters: 1,84,831

Sahib Singh Chauhan (BJP) vs Dataram Bainsla (AAP)

* Chauhan is the sitting MLA. Dataram Bainsla,who lost in 1998

by 11,000 votes,is a powerful local leader.

Mundka

Total number of voters: 2,42,570

Azad Singh (BJP) vs Rambir

(Independent)

* Azad Singh has replaced party colleague and sitting MLA Manoj Shokeen for this seat. Singh is Mayor of North Delhi. Rambir’s wife is a councillor.

Nangloi Jat

Total number of voters: 2,20,572

Manoj Shokeen (BJP) vs Bijendra Singh (INC)

* Manoj Shokeen,MLA from Mundka,is contesting from a new seat. He is up against sitting MLA

Bijendra Singh who is banking on Jat votes.

Kasturba Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,34,681

Shikha Roy (BJP) vs Neeraj Basoya (Congress) vs Madan Lal (AAP)

* Despite this being a BJP stronghold,Basoya won the seat in the last elections. Shikha Roy’s candidature has faced opposition from within her party. Making the contest triangular is AAP’s Madan Lal,a lawyer.

Malviya Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,24,575

Kiran Walia (INC) vs Arti Mehra (BJP) vs Somnath Bharti (AAP)

* Kiran Walia and Arti Mehra are established leaders. Lawyer Somnath Bharti is the AAP candidate.

Adarsh Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,45,657

Ram Kishan Singhal (BJP) vs Mangat Ram Singhal (INC)

*Ram Kishan of BJP is the standing committee chairperson in North Delhi. He is up against sitting MLA Mangat Ram Singhal. Both have set sights on trader votes.

Wazirpur

Total number of voters: 1,53,591

Hari Shankar Gupta (INC) vs Mahendra Nagpal (BJP) vs Praveen Kumar (AAP)

*Mahendra Nagpal has been councillor for 15 years while Hari Shankar Gupta is the sitting MLA. Actor Praveen Kumar,who played the role of Bheem in the TV serial Mahabharat,is the AAP choice.

Trinagar

Total number of voters: 1,46,296

Anil Bhardwaj (INC) vs Nand Kishore Garg (BJP) vs Jitendra Tomar (AAP)

*Trinagar has a large Dalit population which the Congress considers its traditional votebank. The BJP counts on the traders. Bhardwaj defeated Garg by only 1,900 votes in the last elections. The BJP is hoping that Tomar of the AAP will hurt Congress fortunes.

Ambedkar Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,24,456

Chaudhary Prem Singh (INC) vs Khushi Ram (BJP) vs Ashok Chauhan (AAP)

*Chaudhary Prem Singh has won every election from here since 1958. But in the last municipal polls,the Congress lost all four wards. Khushi Ram defeated Prem Singh’s son in the municipal polls. Chauhan is looking to young voters for support. Residents of JJ colonies make up the lion’s share of the electorate.

Sangam Vihar

Total number of voters: 1,37,261

SCL Gupta (BJP) vs Jagparvesh Singh (INC) vs Dinesh Mohania (AAP)

*Gupta won by a narrow margin in the last Assembly polls. Jagparvesh is Congress veteran Sajjan Kumar’s son. Mohania hopes to tap into the water woes of the constituency where many colonies were regularised recently.

Model Town

Total number of voters: 1,41,303

Kanwar Karan Singh (INC) vs Ashok Goel (BJP) vs Akhileshpati Tripathi (AAP)

*BJP treasurer Ashok Goel is considered close to state party president Vijay Goel. Kanwar Karan Singh holds sway in the area. Akhileshpati Tripathi has set his sights on student voters.

Rajinder Nagar

Total number of voters: 1,64,868

Ramakant Goswami (INC) vs R P Singh (BJP) vs Vijender Garg (AAP)

*Rajinder Nagar was a BJP stronghold until sitting MLA and Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami won it in 2008. R P Singh,a Sikh,has

considerable support in the constituency. Vijender Garg is a social activist.

Narela

Total number of voters: 2,11,730

Jaswant Singh (INC) vs Virender Mann (BSP) vs Neel Daman Khatri (BJP) vs

Baljeet Singh Mann (AAP)

*Narela is the largest Assembly constituency,spread over 143.42 sq km. It also houses one of the largest foodgrain markets. While the BSP is counting on voters in slums and resettlement colonies,the Congress and BJP are eyeing Jat votes. Baljeet Singh Mann,a farmer,is a new factor.

Vikaspuri

Total number of voters: 2,85,994

Nand Kishore (INC) vs Krishan Gahlot (BJP) vs Mahinder Yadav (AAP)

*The Assembly constituency has the maximum number of voters. Almost 50 per cent of the electorate are Poorvanchalis,migrants from states in the east.

Rajouri Garden

Total number of voters: 1,47,852

Dhanwanti Chandela (INC) vs

Manjinder Singh Sirsa (BJP-SAD)

*This west Delhi constituency has around 70 per cent Punjabi and Sikh voters. MLA Dayanand Chandela has won the seat four times. This time,SAD has fielded Manjinder Singh Sirsa,its Delhi youth wing president and general secretary of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). Sirsa is the richest candidate in the fray.
