Vehicle fitness check centre to come up in Najafgarh to decrease load

The Transport department is going to open the city’s second vehicle fitness checking centre in Najafgarh.

The Transport department is going to open the city’s second vehicle fitness checking centre in Najafgarh. It will be operated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for two years and will feature a new inspection method.

Sources said the new centre will be ready in a year. “The land for the centre has been allotted by the Delhi government. It will come up on a three-acre campus and will have four test lanes,” the official said.

“For the first two years, the centre will be managed by the Ministry, which will also train Delhi government officials to use new checking machines. After that, the centre will be handed over to the Transport department,” a source said.

“There has been a growing need for a second fitness inspection centre as commercial vehicles need to renew their fitness certificates every year. The new one will come up in Jhuljhuli village,Najafgarh,at a cost of Rs 14 crore,” a Transport official said.

The Transport department has only one fitness checking centre at Burari. Since all commercial vehicles go to this centre, there is a long wait for fitness certificates.

With over 65 lakh registered vehicles in the city,of which around 60 per cent are commercial, the pressure on the Burari centre is immense,a government official said.

“Over 400 vehicles come for inspection at the Burari centre every day,” the official said.

The Delhi government has sought such centres at three locations. A third one is being planned for South Delhi, the official said.

“The government is also planning to increase the ambit of fitness certificates to private vehicles as well. When that policy comes in place, more fitness inspection centres will be needed,” the source said.
