A VAT inspector was caught by a team from the department of trade and taxes for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000. Government sources said the officer had demanded a bribe for re-verification of the business premises of a dealer, whose registration request he had earlier rejected.
Sources said the dealer was not able to get the verification done as the the officer refused to listen to his request without being paid. It was after a complaint was made to the VAT commissioner that a team was constituted to catch the official red-handed. “He was asked to give his complaint in writing. The complainant was also asked to mention the serial numbers and denomination of the bank notes which he gave to the VAT Inspector posted in Ward 93,” said a senior official.
