International Master Vaibhav Suri shocked fifth seed Grandmaster Andrei Deviatkin on the top board while youngster Diptayan Ghosh accounted for Grandmaster Richard Bitoon of Philippines in the fourth round of the 10th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament in Delhi on Tuesday.
Playing black side of English opening,Delhi youngster Suri made crucial tactical moves towards the end to register his fourth win in the tournament after 50 moves. Diptayan showed his end game supremacy to overcome Bitoon Richard in 57 moves arrived out of open Catalan variation.
Six players including Suri,Ghosh and International Master Ashwin Jayaram,who beat Puneet Jaiswal in the fourth round battle,are leading the point table with perfect scores. In other important fourth round encounters,Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte signed peace with Zeng Chongsheng of China while Praveen Thipsay suffered his first defeat in the tournament at the hands of Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa of Philippines. Top seed Sandipan Chanda made short work of Chinese lad Bai Jinshi but second seed Belarusian Grandmaster Aleksej Alexksandrov had to be satisfied with half point against Indian International Master B S Shivananda. In a surprising result in the fourth round,Shailendra Bajpai outwitted International Master Vakhidov Jahongir of Uzbekistan.
