A man from Uttarakhand was detained Friday for allegedly murdering his wife at Naharpur village in Manesar.

The police identified the victim as Nisha, 34, daughter of Sher Singh, who hails from Dhayadi in Uttarakhand’s Almora district. Her husband Rajendra, 26, a Class 12 pass out, is a native of Kapli Khet in Almora, officers said. Rajendra has been living in Gurgaon for the last five years and works at a private company.

According to a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police, they received a call around 9 am on Friday about the murder. A team led by Satender Singh, Inspector and Station House Officer (SHO), Manesar police station, rushed to the scene.

“At the location, they found the woman’s body on the floor of a room with a scarf tied around her neck and blood oozing from her head,” the spokesperson stated. Forensic experts soon examined the crime scene and the body was sent for a post-mortem.

Preliminary investigation indicated that Rajendra was responsible for the woman’s death, officers said. He was apprehended from the crime scene.

“During initial questioning, the accused confessed to the crime, revealing that he and Nisha had met on Instagram, and got married at his home on December 10 last year after she told him that she had no family. Following this, he brought her to Gurgaon. However, the couple frequently argued over minor issues, with Nisha often threatening to leave him or seek a divorce,” the spokesperson said.

According to Rajendra’s statement to the police, a heated argument broke out between them around noon on Thursday. “When Nisha brandished a pair of tongs at him, Rajendra, in a fit of rage, struck her on the back of her head with a rolling pin, causing severe bleeding. In an attempt to stop the bleeding, he tied her scarf around her head but was overcome with anger and strangled her with it, leading to her death,” the officer said.

After committing the crime, Rajendra fled to his brother’s room and later went to his workplace at around 7.30 pm on Thursday. He returned to his rented accommodation the next morning, and informed the landlord about the incident, following which the police were alerted, the police said.

Officers have informed Nisha’s family and further legal action, including registering a case and formally arresting Rajendra, will be initiated based on the complaint filed by her relatives upon their arrival.

The police are also awaiting the post-mortem report and collecting more statements to ascertain the circumstances behind the incident, the spokesperson added.
