As DJ,Talvin Singh has remixed songs for Madonna,Bjork and more, but when he sits beside his tabla, his Indian inheritance meet his British influences, and classical sounds get friendly with contemporary drum and bass. The 35-year-old Londoner, whose music came to be called Asian Underground, performs a deejay set at Six Month Story,at Chhattarpur, today.
I am looking forward to my show since I will be performing a deejay set after a long time, says Singh, just back from gigs in Dubai and Istanbul. The setlist will include tracks from his forthcoming releases and a backlog of unreleased material. Even though I am surrounded by western influences,my cultural body is very much rooted in India, says Singh, who is loath to peg his music in any particular genre.
He will soon be collaborating with violinist Kala Ramnath and pianist Vijay Iyer, but until then he is content behind the console.
The performance begins at 9 pm at Six Month Story.
