Union Budget: As AIIMS gets hike of Rs 677 crore, infra & new equipment in focus

With an additional allocation of Rs 677 crore, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi saw a hike in the funds marked in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday.

The budget allocation for Safdarjung Hospital and associated Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) has also been increased by nearly 16%.

The budget allocation for AIIMS Delhi, which was Rs 4,523 crore in the last fiscal, has been hiked to Rs 5,200 crore an increase of around 15%.

According to officials, funds to the tune of Rs 650 crore were sought for procuring equipment for which the allocation was made. The rest of the funds will be utilised for salaries, hikes, dearness allowances, and purchasing consumables like drugs, petrol, medicines, and payment to outsourced staff, and sanitation workers.

“The amount has been increased mainly for augmenting the institute with state-of-the-art equipment and replacement of aging capital equipment and for the infrastructure and equipment of the newly-constructed blocks and the minimum wage increase in the salaries,” said Dr Reema Dada.

She said the expenditure is estimated on consumables for five new blocks like the new RAK OPD, mother and child block, surgical block, and geriatric new private ward which have become functional. The estimate was projected due to increased demand for machinery and equipment in new blocks and consultancy and preparatory work under the master plan.

The Safdarjung Hospital and associated VMMC too saw an increase from Rs 1,874 crore allocated in the 2024-2025 fiscal year to Rs 2,179 crore in the 2025-2026 Union Budget.

Meanwhile, the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and associated medical college, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, saw a decline from Rs 1,610 crore to 1,458 crore.
