Voicetap,a portal that was launched in April,facilitates telephonic interaction between students and experts,academicians and seniors who have successfully cracked entrance examinations. The procedure is simple. The Voicetap team gets an expert to talk to students over a conference call. If they had doubts about a career in banking,Ambuj Chandna,head (western zone),ING Vysya Bank,answered their questions. When they could not figure out whether to go to Lady Shri Ram College or Miranda House,students from the two colleges were online to give a comparative study. Till now the site has conducted over 40 conference calls.

Education is clubbed with entertainment on bharatstudent.com that divides its data into neat categories. While “Study Zone” provides information on courses and colleges in India and abroad,“Campus TV” gives a virtual tour of UC,Berkeley,and Columbia University,among others. There is also a section for social networking. “It caters to the different needs of students,” says Ramesh Koneru,business development manager.

Indianscholar.org too mixes information with some fun elements. Rajender Singh,a scientist with Central Drug Research Institute,often surfs the site for information on foreign scholarships. “Having most of the information one needs in one place makes it convenient,” says Singh,27. He is also a member of the social network on the portal and often uploads jokes and education-related links on the homepage. “Most of the members on the network belong to the same age group and have similar concerns. We help each other,” he adds,as he scrolls down the website to note specifications of a scholarship.

For all the convenience the Net offers,do remember to double check with the university and college concerned. That one long walk to the campus is essential.
