Unauthorised parking and the city

The MCD and the traffic police have started marking authorised parking lots in the city so that vehicles are not parked beyond a certain area. Newsline takes a look at the problem of unauthorised parking and prosecution of the offence,with the help of some numbers.

* 53 lakh — the number of vehicles on the city’s roads. Around 1,000 vehicles are added each day

* There are around 800 authorised and unauthorised parking sites in the city

* A list of all unauthorised parking sites in the 12 zones will be prepared by the MCD in the next 7 days

* The MCD will also identify parking space along the 2,500 commercial and mixed land-use stretches notified under the Masterplan-2021

* During a drive conducted in February,the Delhi Traffic Police booked around 800 vehicles on a single day for unauthorised parking

* As on end of last month,the Delhi Traffic Police has collected Rs 1.27 crore as challan money for unauthorised parking

* The maximum amount came from auto-rickshaws as around 10,000 were booked for unauthorised parking

* 7,300 two-wheelers were booked for unauthorised parking,followed by 5,200 private cars

* According to official estimates,meanwhile,an average authorised parking lot fetches between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh per month for civic agencies
