Trying to move a pile of marble stones at a construction site on Janpath Lane, two workers slipped on the wet ground and were crushed to death after the stones fell on them.
The victims, Bolli, 31, and Vijay, 24, were working at the construction site where a villa was being built.
Bolli’s nephew, who works at the same construction site, said around 5.30 pm on Thursday, his uncle and Vijay were near a stand that had the pile of marble. “They tried to pick up the marble slabs but the ground was wet due to the rain. My uncle slipped and the stones fell on their heads… The stones weighed over 30 kg. There was a wall behind them and they hit it,” he alleged.
“Their heads were smashed.”
Manish, Vijay’s older brother, said he came to Delhi from Agra only 10 days ago. “Bolli too was from Agra… Police took their bodies to RML Hospital. I will get Vijay’s body today,” he said.
Bolli’s nephew said the victims are married and have kids. “Bolli has an 8-month-old daughter. Vijay has a two-year-old. We all got jobs here through a relative,” he said.
At the spot, the construction site has been sealed. “Don’t let anyone in apart from the police,” a Connaught Place police officer was heard telling the guard at the site. Ashraf, a pan shop owner opposite the construction site, said that he was horrified after seeing the bodies. “I don’t know what will happen to the families. They used to come here frequently,” he said.
Police officers at Connaught Place police station didn’t respond to queries by The Indian Express.
