Police identified the accused as Basudev Swain (35), a resident of Lucknow and Deepak Kumar (40) from Varanasi. Both were apprehended from the jurisdiction of Kharavel Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar.
Police said a complaint was received from a businessman who runs a rice and food supply company under the name MPD Retail. “The complainant, engaged in the rice and food supply business for the last 15 years, alleged that Deepak Kumar Singh, Basudev Swain and Amit Kumar Singh deceitfully posed as officials of Smartvalue Limited and claimed that their company intended to purchase rice for testing purposes and for future large-scale procurement,” said DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh.
However, after receiving the goods, the accused stopped responding to calls and messages.
When the complainant contacted the company, it was confirmed that none of the three accused were associated with Smartvalue, and that the documents, seals and purchase orders they had used were fake. The rice, police said, had already been sold off for profit.
A case was registered at Subhash Place police station. During investigation, police examined the forged documents to confirm that the accused had no official links with the company.
After their arrest from Bhubaneswar, Swain and Kumar allegedly admitted to their involvement in the fraud. “They said they had started committing such offences to earn easy money. Efforts are underway to locate their third associate and trace the proceeds of the crime,” said an officer.
