Trying to flag down speeding car,cop hit

The incident was reported in Northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area on Saturday night.

Police officers said that the head constable is battling for life at a city hospital.

Police have identified the cop as Jaipal Singh. He was manning the stretch after the signal near Ritchie Rich Hotel in Shalimar Bagh. He was standing along with two other constables when he spotted the car jumping the traffic redlight.

“Singh tried to wave the Wagon-R car to a stop. When the driver did not stop,he jumped on the bonnet of the car and maintained his balance by clutching the wiper. The driver,identified as businessman Manoj Kumar,dragged the cop for about 300 metres and then took a sudden left turn which made the cop fall on the road. Kumar then ran him over,” a senior police officer said.

A police officer said as Manoj was trying to flee after running over the cop,Singh’s colleagues informed the Police Control Room.

The policemen chased the businessman and caught up with him.

Police officers said that another Police Control Room van rushed Singh to a city hospital,where he is undergoing treatment.

Doctors have said that his condition is critical,but out of danger.

A senior police officer said the accused,Manoj,has told the police that he tried to speed away because he wanted to avoid being challaned. His medical examination has not shown any traces of alcohol,the officer said.

A case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC has been registered against Manoj.

Manoj runs a general store in Tri Nagar. He was returning to his Kirti Nagar residence from the Pitampura side when the incident took place.
