Tributes paid to Vinod Mehta

Mehta passed away this morning at the AIIMS after a prolonged illness, culminating in a multiple organ failure. He was 73.

From politicians to journalists, a host of prominent personalities paid homage to distinguished journalist and Editorial Chairman of the Outlook magazine, Vinod Mehta. Among those who attended Mehta’s last rites were Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP veteran leader LK Advani.

The last rites were performed at the Lodhi electric crematorium where Mehta’s elder brother, Major General (ret) Ashok Mehta, lit the funeral pyre.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and CPI leader D Raja too attended the ceremony.Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death with his tweet “Frank & direct in his opinions, Vinod Mehta will be remembered as a fine journalist & writer. Condolences to his family on his demise”.

Mehta, who launched and edited a number of publications, passed away this morning at the AIIMS after a prolonged illness, culminating in a multiple organ failure. He was 73.

Mehta’s wife Sumita Paul said, “He was first admitted with a respiratory disorder, which had a domino effect and spread all over. He had a multiple organ failure. His body could not take it anymore. He was full of humour always and spoke his mind. My dog Editor will miss him the most.”

“I had met him six days ago. He was under a lot of strain when he spoke. I respected him as a journalist. I may not have always agreed with him, but I liked what he wrote. He had his own views and expressed them without holding anything back,” Advani said.

Arun Jaitley remembered him as a “well known editor with a distinct point of view on issues…His debates will be missed. He had that spark in him”.
