Transport body asks minister for more power

Another project to install CCTV cameras in buses as a safety measure is also likely to take off soon, officials said.

Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), responsible for the maintenance of the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor, on Wednesday came up with ways to make improvements on the Ambedkar Nagar-Moolchand stretch. The suggestion were made through a presentation to Transport Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, during which, sources said, DIMTS also requested the minister for an increase in their powers.

The AAP government had said they would review the BRT corridor and take a decision on whether they wanted to continue with the project. The previous government had floated plans of constructing 13 more BRTs in Delhi, which were later dropped due the widespread discontent regarding the project.

Meanwhile, to upgrade technology used in buses, the process of installing electronic ticketing machines (ETM) in 5,000 buses has taken off. A consultant has been hired to implement and monitor the project, officials said.

“The consultant will shortlist vendors, help with bidding and then monitor the implementation of the project. Installation of the machines should take off by August,’’ a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) official said.
