Traffic dept officials object to ISBT shift

The Delhi Traffic Police has raised objections over the transport department’s decision to temporarily shift the Inter State Bus Terminus

The Delhi Traffic Police has raised objections over the transport department’s decision to temporarily shift the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) from Kashmere Gate to Sarai Kale Khan. The terminus that operates large number of buses will be shut for four months for renovation work. The Traffic department, however, feels that the shift will create inconvenience for the drivers as well as the commuters.

Commenting on the shift,B S Bassi,Special Commissioner (Traffic),said,“There is a need to balance the interest of renovation and smooth movement of traffic. You cannot ignore one for the other. There needs to be a proper balance for traffic management. Nearly two thousand buses come to the ISBT everyday. Even if it is for a valid reason, the shift is going to create a lot of inconvenience.”

The Transport department has not given its approval to shift the terminus to the proposed stop. The officers feel that even when there is a need to shift the terminus for renovation work, there has to be an open space, enough for the accommodation of thousands of buses. It would also mean gearing up resources so that the dispersed traffic is properly managed.

“Sarai Kale Khan will not be able to take that much load. It is beyond its capacity and hence the area will be clogged. It will be inconvenient for the commuters, drivers and us,” said Bassi.

“We have asked the Transport department to arrange for an alternative location for the terminus. A place from where buses originating and dispersing from ISBT can be smoothly dispersed. There has to be an open space for that,” he added.

“Our objective is to give least inconvenience to the commuters and drivers. We will put extra manpower and resources to make it work. We will extend our full support to the transport department but there has to be a balance,” he added

Along with suggesting an open space for a new temporary terminus, the department has also given out some suggestions to make this proposal work and ensure a proper traffic management in the area.

“We have asked the transport department to carry out renovation work in phases. Along with it we have also asked them to use a part of the ISBT through out the period of renovation. If the renovation is carried out in phases, other parts can still be used for the operation of buses. It will be convenient for all,” said Bassi.

The officers also said that this weather is not suitable for the shift. It will create congestion on the roads and nuisance for the public.

“We have also suggested to start the work only after the monsoons. Delhi rain clogs the road, and the traffic movement becomes very slow. Sarai Kale Khan is a low lying area, hence it faces a water logging problem. Therefore, parking of buses will be difficult. Even if we have to look for an alternate place to shift the terminus it can only begin after the monsoon when the weather is clear,” he said.
