Hours after the government told the Delhi High Court that it would step on the gas against drunk driving by revoking the licence of offenders,an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) on anti-drunken driving vigil was beaten up by an allegedly inebriated man and his helper on Wednesday night.

The incident took place in Mangolpuri,Outer Delhi. The police said the traffic cop,ASI Bhola Ram,suffered serious head injuries.

ASI Ram has told police that the incident occurred when he tried to penalise a driver who had steered into a no-entry zone. This is the third incident this year in which a traffic policeman has been manhandled on duty.

“ASI Bhola Ram was deputed to Rohini traffic circle in Outer Delhi and was checking motorists on the Jaipur Golden Hospital Road around 11 pm on Wednesday,” a police official from Mongolpuri police station said. “After he saw a van heading towards a no-entry zone he tried to signal it to a halt but the van broke barricades and came to a stop.”

As he asked the driver, identified as one Ramesh,to come out,the driver stepped off the vehicle with his helper. And beat up ASI Ram with sticks and rods, the police official said. “The ASI called the police, and was finally saved when the police arrived.”

ASI Ram was admitted in the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. Ramesh and his helper were arrested. A case has been registered against them for causing hurt and for obstructing a public servant on duty.
