Traffic cop caught taking bribe on video, suspended

Police said they received a video of the complainant handing out Rs 200 to the officer.

A Delhi Traffic Police officer was suspended on Friday, after police received a video of him taking a bribe on their recently launched whatsapp anti-corruption helpline. The accused, head constable Rama Chandran, is the ninth police officer to be suspended in less than a month following complaints received via the helpline.

Police said they received a video of the complainant handing out Rs 200 to the officer.  The officer is reportedly seen returning the registration certificate of the vehicle, without penalising the complainant. Police said in the video, the complainant is heard telling the officer,  “ab challan to nahi hoga na, kahin challan na aa jaye baad mein” (I hope I will not get a challan later).

On receiving the video footage last week, an inquiry was conducted and the complaint was found to be genuine. A case was then registered. A department inquiry has also been ordered against the officer.
