To watch over heart of Delhi,NDMC plans CCTV grid

NDMC chairman Jalaj Srivastava said the security of the VIP area topped the council’s priority list.

To enhance safety and security in the heart of the capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) plans to bring the whole of Lutyens’ Delhi under CCTV surveillance.

NDMC chairman Jalaj Srivastava said the security of the VIP area topped the council’s priority list. More streetlights have been installed along the avenue roads to do away with blind spots,he said.

The chairman said the trees on these stretches posed a problem in ensuring proper lighting in the area. He said the council was looking at plan to install solar lights. “ But again, trees are the problem. If the light poles are not high enough, the solar panel will not work as it will be in the shadow of the canopy. And if the poles are too high, then the light will not be enough,” Srivastava said.

Srivastava said Tata Power Limited had been shortlisted to undertake the project in the NDMC area.

“The company has successfully installed lights in several areas before. We are working with them and will soon start a pilot project in the Delhi Imperial Zone (DIZ) – Baba Kharak Singh Marg,Gol Market and Mandir Marg. We want the streetlights to be controlled via a single panel rather than have separate panels on each light pole,” Srivastava said.

“We have ensured that all junctions and important areas in Central Delhi are under CCTV surveillance. This will ensure that every government agency plays an active role in curbing crime in the area. In the U,S they have made a CCTV grid to cover each and every block. We plan to emulate this and will do it on a micro-level,” he said.
