Tihar inmate killed as two groups clash

He was stabbed with weapon made from steel plates,DG says probe on.

A 27-year-old prisoner was killed while three others were injured when two groups of prisoners clashed inside Tihar jail on Friday. The incident took place in the morning in the canteen of jail number 1.

The prisoner who died has been identified as Javed Khan,a resident of Seelampur. He was stabbed with a sharp object,made from a steel plate by prisoners. Four other prisoners Ravi,Prithvi,Mukesh and Mohan were injured in the attack.

Police said Javed was rushed to the nearby DDU Hospital,where he succumbed to injuries. Doctors declared him dead around 4 pm. A doctor from the hospital said Javed was brought to the hospital with severe head injuries and multiple fractures on his body.

Javed was convicted in a dacoity case seven years ago and had been imprisoned since then. DG (Prisons) Vimla Mehra said: “He had many cases registered against him. It was a clash between groups of prisoners. We are probing the reason for the scuffle.”

Mehra said the jail administration had increased security for Pakistani prisoners lodged in Tihar. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Three of the injured prisoners were discharged,while the fourth is recuperating.

This incident was reported days after prisoners of a high security ward in Tihar’s jail number 4 clashed with guards from the Tamil Nadu state police. Two policemen and two guards suffered grievous injuries and were taken to DDU hospital.

The incident took place on April 9,when seven prisoners stepped out of their cells and claimed that relatives had come to meet them.

They were caught trying to scale the jail’s walls by the TN policemen.

Sources in the jail said five TN policemen entered the high-security ward to escort five prisoners to relatives. They spotted seven prisoners trying to scale the walls and escape. When they were stopped by the five guards,the seven attacked the guards.

“The TN police personnel had to use force to contain the seven prisoners. In the process,two personnel suffered grievous injuries. In retaliation,the police personnel attacked the seven prisoners,two of whom were seriously injured. The four were rushed to the jail dispensary,after which they were referred to DDU hospital,” stated the FIR on the incident.
