This civic elections, residents may not have to run from-pillar-to-post in search of their polling booths,as the State Election Commission plans to provide voter slips, containing the necessary details,to every household.

“The slip will be sent to the residence of each voter. This will help the electorate identify the polling booths where they are listed to cast votes. Voters will be intimated in this manner one week before the MCD elections,” said State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta.

Till now,the Election Commission used to distribute voter slips only during Assembly polls. And,this will be the first time that the commission will follow this pattern for MCD elections. An official said that although the political parties also send out slips on households, this was essentially done to promote their party’s cause.

Around 8,000 Block Level Officers (BLO) have begun surveying the addresses of voters,he said.

This year, the voter population in the Capital stands at an 1.3 crores, and to enable smooth voting, the Election Commission has increased the number of polling booths. Nearly 13,000 polling booths will be set up across Delhi, the official said.

“With many polling booths in the proximity, voters tend to get confused. When electorates find their name not listed at a certain polling booth, they return without exercising franchise. With the distribution of slips, these constraints will be overcome,” said Mehta.

Mehta met returning officers on Thursday to oversee preparations for the MCD polls, and he plans to have an interaction with advertising agencies to finalise the election awareness campaign.

“Advertising firms made a presentation. We are planning to organise street plays, air radio and TV jingles and print advertisements. We will soon finalise the theme of the campaign,” Mehta said.
