Two of Bollywoods finest character actors,Om Puri and Ila Arun, are the stars of the crossover film West is West,a sequel to the popular East is East. I would love to play Mamata Banerjee in a film, said Arun, during the films promotion at Blue O in Ambience Mall,Gurgaon,on Tuesday. But,as it turns out,Arun is just as happy playing an abandoned first wife, stuck somewhere in Pakistan.
In West is West, she is Mrs Khan Number One,the woman that George Khan,
essayed to perfection by Om Puri, had left behind in Pakistan 30 years ago. Now,in a last ditch attempt to instill some values into his son,George packs him off to Mrs Khan Number One. In the process, the tables are turned and he must come face to face with his own transgressions.
The film releases on Friday, and the actors, along with producer Leslee Udwin and co-distributor Satish Kaushik were at pains to convince people that West is West is its own film. Even if you havent seen East is East you wouldnt have any problem relating to it. They also mentioned that the film was already a hit in the UK,with earnings of around $4.5 million at the box office.
While,East is East was a slapstick comedy, this film carries a deeper message in its humor, said Puri. So,if you want to laugh and be wise at the same time, head West this summer.
