The Last Resort

Mumbai-based tour operator Vijesh Thakkar watched his best friend’s marriage disintegrate,up close.

Mumbai-based tour operator Vijesh Thakkar watched his best friend’s marriage disintegrate,up close. “I saw them try hard to resolve their differences but nothing worked. They had forgotten how to enjoy each others company without sparring,” says Thakkar, who then introduced special packages for stressed couples in his company K V Tours and Travels. So,for couples who’ve completely run out of options, can this last ditch effort of a romantic week actually rekindle romance?

“We don’t claim to be marriage counsellors or experts but our package is sensitively designed. We make sure that the destinations we choose for this particular tour are off the beaten track and couples are free to talk things out,” says Thakkar. Sparsely populated towns and luxurious living, the package is usually a week long. Interestingly,Thakkar has come up with unique touches that might not save a crumbling relationship but will certainly get talked about,if nothing else. They add another couple to the tour, who’ve emerged from a similar marital crisis and survived,to act as guides and counselors. “If we see that the couple would prefer to be left alone,we give them that option as well,” says Thakkar. The price for the tour depends from destination to destination.

Thakkar says he’s receiving many enquiries about his divorce packages. “Extended families whose kids have hit a rough patch in their marriages, giving children reassurance through a holiday, these tours are going to evolve into something much bigger,” predicts Thakkar. All’s well that ends well?

Not without a fight.
