The East-West Connect

Even as she readies for her upcoming Bollywood release,Mallika Sherawat can’t stop talking about her Hollywood connect.

Even as she readies for her upcoming Bollywood release,Mallika Sherawat can’t stop talking about her Hollywood connect.

Mallika Sherawat is one actor who has mastered the art of staying in the news. She is just back from America after having shot a music video with Bruno Mars, which went on air last week. She recently featured in an item number in the Tamil remake of Dabangg. In Mumbai, she is promoting her upcoming film Kismet,Love,Paisa,Dilli (KLPD) and awaiting the release of her Hollywood film Politics of Love in India. “It is an exciting time to be an actor. One can do so much and constantly be on the move. I have two industries to take care of,” she laughs.

Sherawat was last seen in Bollywood in a cameo in Indra Kumar’s Double Dhamaal (2011). Her last solo release,Hisss (2010),had a dismal run at the box-office. Yet the actor shows no signs of nervousness. She enthusiastically talks about the advantages of working on one film at a time. “I like to take it slow. I spent the whole of last year filming and releasing Politics Of Love. This year,I worked on KLPD,” she says. The film belongs to the comic thriller genre, which she isn’t familiar with. Yet,she decided to be a part of it after watching Sanjay Khanduri’s first film,Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local.

For Sherawat,KLPD is also a comeback to ‘acting’ of sorts. The actor — who first became famous for her 17 kisses in the film Khwahish — rose to fame with Murder. The glamorous image stayed with her and filmmakers continued to offer Sherawat roles that bordered on sensuality and glamour. There were a few exceptions, such as Pyaar Ke Side Effects,Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam and Ugly aur Pagli, which showcased her ability to act. “In KLPD I play a no-nonsense North Indian girl,” she says. However, she isn’t sure if this will change her bold image. “It’s not I who can change it. My fans love me in a certain manner,” she says. “But I would want to expand my acting repertoire.”

Apart from this upcoming release,Sherawat has a film with Sonu Sood called Lucky Unlucky. “I am yet to start shooting for it,” she says. But she feigns ignorance when asked about the film Mumbai Mirror that she had reportedly signed opposite gutkha baron Sachiin Joshi. “I am having a memory lapse all of a sudden,” she says. Her decade in the industry has surely taught her a thing or two about being tactful. “Earlier,I used to get affected by failure. But failures don’t hurt me anymore,” she says.
