Its entirely fitting that Delhi-based NGO,Khushii, would hold their first fashion auction at the spectacular Emporio Mall: after all,the idea was to get the citys most beautiful people to donate generously for a charity where fifteen of Indias top designers contributed outfits.
If you can overlook the indefinable weirdness of charity being linked with glamour and celebrity, still a new concept in India,Khushii can claim to be the first NGO to get innovative with raising money from the fashion industry. Their art fundraisers have always had fantastic turnouts and this Friday night at the Emporio was equally spectacular. The clothes were pre-sold,to avoid any disappointments, but the organisers need not have worried. The response was quite to their expectations. Socialites like Feroze Gujral and Kalyani Chawla modeled outfits designed by the likes of Tarun Tahiliani,Manish Arora,JJ Valaya,Falguni and Shane Peacock,Shantanu and Nikhil,Gauri-Nainika.
An LV bag went under the hammer for Rs 1.5 lakhs and a Swarovski item for Rs 75,000,both Rs 50,000 more than the original price. The Mehra brothers bought back their own clothes,Gujral bid for an outfit by designer Malini Ramani. Mira Gulati of jewellery brand Mirari chose an Ashima-Leena number. None of us including me do enough on our own for society. So if we can contribute to events like this which work towards a greater cause, then nothing like it, said designer Suneet Varma. Guests include actor Irrfan Khan who hobnobbed with former cricketer and MP Mohammad Azharuddin, while designers like Ashish Soni,Rina Dhaka,Aparna Chandra and JJ Valaya caught up with industry friends. There was also the launch of a book of Urdu couplets and poetry,Tashnagi,by Manzar Bhopali. Who says charity cant be fun?
