There could have been many reasons as to why group B leaders Tarun Sangha would have taken Air Force,Palam lightly in their group match at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday. The airmen must not have figured in the list of their adversaries apart from the draw,in the presence of heavyweights like Indian Nationals,Simla Youngs,Hindustan FC.

Their relaxed entry into the match with a win away from qualifying for the super league and two more games in hand also didn’t quite reflect the otherwise 2-0 win on Monday, their most convincing one this season as far as the scoreboard shows.

By the final whistle, whimpers of pulling off the season’s toughest win had become a common talk. For the takings,a couple of moves from substitute Sakil Ahmed,Mohammad Mokhtar and Figo looked incisive, but at the same time fell to the trio of N Rathi,C Roy and S Dondiyal. If these three took the credit for waving off every attack in the first half, midfielder L Sanha walked out with the blame of missing the simplest of chances—after a defensive lapse from Sangha’s Shankho Kolay.

Many believed a goal at that stage — with Sangha’s main striker Henry walking off with a hamstring injury-could have changed the larger picture as the other Nigerian Figo was heavily marked.

Sangha never looked the same team in the second half until Figo’s strike in the 44th minute, almost against the run of play. The first goal, maintaining Sangha’s overdependence on their foreigners’ scoring prowess, somehow sparked off a flurry of attacks revolving around Mokhtar and Altafuddin Ahmed. Air Force too went on the offensive, but were undone by striker L Saka’s poor positioning — he was either too forward or back from scoring opportunities and opponent goalkeeper Subhash Singha Roy.

Sangha, however, took a lot of heart from the second goal in the 81st minute with Altafuddin volleying a rebound after Figo’s strike was saved by Air Force custodian Feroz Ahmed. this was the goal was the first by an Indian this season for the club.

‘Earlier,Shadab FC beat Indian Air Force,New Delhi 1-0. The only goal was scored by Migeria’s Chidi Kumanou, the Nigerian striker in the 64th minute.
