With talent hunts and reality dance and music shows for children becoming a rage on television, the trend has begun spilling into our larger cultural space.
A recent fashion, music and dance event for kids organised by Punjab Kesari at Delhis Talkatora stadium underlined why such functions draw both the masses and classes. They not only attract eager audiences who come to cheer talented children, but also find willing participants among prominent people from arts, culture, politics and cinema. The show categories (retro and cocktail) may have mimicked adult fashion, but the children imbued them with innocuous cheer, bringing dance and music to the platform, turning the event with a baby show for three-year-olds into an entertaining evening. Eleven-year-old Karamjit, winner of the Madonna Little Kesari Star title, that came with a cheque of Rs 1 lakh and a trophy, couldnt stop grinning as she received her prize from Ashwani Chopra of Punjab Kesri and Kiran Chopra, chairperson of the Kesri Senior Citizens club. Pop singers Daler Mehndi,Jasbir Jassi and Malkit Singh were the star judges, while Vidya Balan,Raveena Tandon and Ekta Kapur were the Bollywood biggies at the event. Also present were Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla,BJPs Shahnawaz Husain,Congress MP Janardan Trivedi and former IPS officer Dr Kiran Bedi.
