With passengers struggling to push luggage trolleys across the carpeted floor at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

With passengers struggling to push luggage trolleys across the carpeted floor at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, authorities are drawing up plans to replace the carpet with granite flooring in the area between the automated walkways.

Floor carpeting at T3,stretching over 1,65,000 square metres, has invited criticism from passengers who struggle to push luggage trolleys, especially in the area between the walkalators.

Airport developer Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is looking to replace the carpet with granite, procured from Saudi Arabia,in the area between the walkways.

The terminal already has 2,60,000 square metres of granite flooring.

“Passenger feedback has suggested there is trouble pulling trolleys between the walkalators, and passengers don’t prefer the automated walkways if they have heavy luggage. Replacement of carpet with granite is being considered as an option only in areas between the walkalators,” a senior DIAL official said.

A spokesperson for DIAL said it was “not contemplating any change regarding the carpets as of now” but a decision will be taken soon.

“We have collected passenger feedback, based on which several changes are being made. Initiatives have been taken on the city side as well with changes in lanes after passengers reported inconvenience in moving their luggage,” the spokesperson said.

UK’s Brintons Carpets manufactured and supplied the woven Axminster, almost equal to the area of 24 football fields, for the Terminal 3.
