The BJP publicity machine is hard at work to give CM candidate Harsh Vardhan an image makeover as the driving force behind the pulse polio campaign and someone with an untainted political history.
Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday launched the revised edition (2013) of Harsh Vardhans book on polio eradication. A Tale of Two Drops, which he wrote in 1994,is only the first of the partys planned media blitz. While an ad campaign on radio similarly extolls his work as Delhis health minister between 1993 and 1998,the BJP also plans to roll out a print and outdoor publicity drive shortly.
After releasing the book on Tuesday,Sushma praised Harsh Vardhan and recalled his contribution to the polio eradication programme while urging workers to help him in eradicating the Congress like Harsh Vardhan eradicated polio in the coming elections.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the Leader of the Opposition said that rise in the prices of onions was a case of divine justice and it would lead to the downfall of the Congress. When onion prices soared,Dikshit used to wear garlands of onions to campaign against me. Our government was ousted and now the time has come for the downfall of the Congress. The same onions will take the government down… not just onions, the prices of vegetables are also going up, Sushma said.
Attacking Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that the Muzaffarnagar riot victims were approached by Intelligence agencies, she said that Rahul should have talked about violence in UP and, before that, his party should talk about the 1984 riots. The Congress should have thought about using the word communal. They cannot win elections by using such words, she said.
Harsh Vardhan has asked me to hold 100 meetings before the elections,to which I have agreed, she said.
Speaking at his book launch,Harsh Vardhan said as per World Health Organisations rules,a country should have zero cases of polio for full three years to be eligible for polio-free certification.
On January 13,2014,India is expected to join the proud community of nations which have made polio history. We witnessed a polio case in January 2011 but Im glad that we will be a polio-free country soon, the BJPs CM candidate said.
