Delhi Police has cleared a proposal to install 16 CCTV cameras at the karbala in Lodhi Colony. Police sources said the decision was taken due to security reasons, after last years riots at the site. The CCTV cameras will be installed within a month, police said.
The karbala site in Lodhi Colony was the centre of riots last year, when residents clashed with police.
Police had to intervene in a dispute between the residents welfare association and the Waqf board over the use of a gate at the karbala.
Police sources said that the decision to install CCTV cameras was taken in May after several meetings between senior police officers of the district. Two tenders were issued in May,after which it was decided to invite technical bids on May 31. The date,May 31,for the day of opening the tender had to be postponed. The technical bids will be invited on June 26, a senior police officer said.
A police source confirmed that the CCTVs were being installed for security purposes. Sources claimed that many areas were not covered by cameras installed by the Waqf board. Having a CCTV camera which will be directly connected to Lodhi Colony police station will also help ensure that any miscreant is caught on tape, a police source said.
Waqf Board secretary Bahadur Abbas Naqvi said the board was unaware of the police decision to install CCTV cameras.
We did not make any requests to the police. There are some CCTV cameras installed by us,while the police have also installed some CCTV cameras on their own. We have not received any communication from the police in this regard, he said.
